New Street Works Qualifications Regulations come into force on 10th April 2010.
From April 2011, anyone carrying out work on the highways will be required to be
reassessed every 5 years for professional competence
These regulations introduce the requirement that supervisors and operatives must be reassessed every five years
to confirm that they are still competent before they can re-register and continue to carry out street works.
April 2010 - Street works units 002 and 010 become registered qualifications and SWQR can issue
ID Cards (Compulsory).
April 2011 - The mandatory requirement for Street works reassessment begins.
From October 2010 there will exist the option to undertake Street works reassessment where
registered qualifications are to expire 6 months prior to April 2011.
Awarding bodies will issue a Street works reassessment certificate of achievement to
enable qualifications to be re-registered.
A six month period before and after expiry of your Street works card exists to allow a period of grace.
After 6 month of expiry date shown on your Street works card from April 2011, the qualification ceases to be
registered. Full assessment as a new entrant will be required to register.
Starting the Street works examination
No candidate ID, no examination
We must validate the identity of the candidate with photographic identification.
We must validate the candidate holds a current Street works card.
The pass mark for all reassessed tests is 80% (8 of the 10 questions correct) there
are 10 questions for each street works units.
All relevant areas of the question paper must be completed by the candidate.
Question papers are not for discussion with candidates.
The time allocated for each question paper is 20 minutes.
Street works qualifications can only be undertaken in the English language,
there is no facility to use interpreters.

These documents will also be made available to you if you require them on the day of the examination.
We are accredited by City & Guilds and when the NRSWA training course has been successfully completed the unit
accreditation training certificates are then submitted to the C&G NRSWA register to issue a Street works card.
There are many different units under the Street works Act for operatives and supervisors.
Street works Units for Operatives.
Streetworks Unit 1
Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus.
Training will be given in the use of cable avoidance equipment and developing your skills
in identifying Utilities Plans, symbols and apparatus.
Streetworks Unit 2
Signing, Lighting & Guarding.
Training will be given in the use of cable avoidance equipment and developing your skills
in identifying Utilities Plans, symbols and apparatus.
Streetworks Unit 3
Excavation in the Highway.
The training given will enable you to identify different types of footway carriageways correctly, excavate,
provide protection to underground apparatus, select and store suitable excavated material for backfill.
Streetworks Unit 4
Reinstatement & Compaction of Backfill Materials.
Following training you will be able to identify road type, select suitable material for backfill,
backfill to the NRWSA standards and dispose of surplus materials Safely.
Streetworks Unit 5
Reinstatement of Sub-Base & Road-base in Non Bituminous Materials.
To enable you to complete unit 5 you will be trained in the identification and
preparation of differing layers of backfill materials.
Streetworks Unit 6
Reinstatement in Cold-Lay Bituminous Material.
Training is given in preparing and constructing layers to receive cold lay surfacing materials.
Streetworks Unit 7
Reinstatement in Hot-Lay Bituminous Material.
Trained as above with the addition of laying hot materials.
Streetworks Unit 8
Reinstatement of Concrete slabs.
Prepare sub base, edges and reinforcement materials to enable you to form a concrete slab tied-in to
existing surfacing This training is essential for concrete road works.
Streetworks Unit 9
Reinstatement of Modular & Concrete Footways.
This training will prepare you for the removal of existing surfaces prepare bedding materials
to enable you to lay modular and/or concrete surfacing.
Street works units for supervisors
These units mirror the above contents and will enable the trainee to Supervise and
identify any misdemeanours of the NRSWA being perpetrated by the work force.

From October 2010 a Streetworks operative or supervisor can be awarded with a
SWQR card for Unit 2 or Unit 10 and from April will become mandatory requirement.
In general to achieve Street works training qualifications the candidate must achieve a
minimum of 3 units, however in many cases the candidate will start by carrying out a
5 day training programme and if successful will achieve the 6 or 7 street works units.
For Street work operative unit 1 to 6 + 9
For Street works supervisors 1 + 10 to 14
or a candidate can obtain individual Street works units by attending 1 day modules.
